Basics

1

1. When was Neurofeedback developed?

The first Neurofeedback experiment was conducted in 1965 on cats. It was in 1971 that Neurofeedback was introduced to humans. The first pathology targeted was epilepsy. Studies showed that 65% of seizures could be reduced following Neurofeedback training.
2

2. Who developed Neurofeedback?

It was an American researcher named Barry Sterman who discovered the first use of Neurofeedback in 1965. Subsequently, Joel Lubar contributed greatly to the development of this approach in the 1970s.
3

3. How does Neurofeedback work?

Neurofeedback works on the principle of reward (operant conditioning). The electrode headset captures brain activity in real time. When the brain stimulates the target area, we give a reward (a video plays). When it stops, the reward is removed.
4

6. Why is it not better known in Quebec?

Neurofeedback is experiencing a surge of popularity in the United States. Quebec is behind because training, scientific articles and equipment suppliers are almost all from the US. There are only about 8 neuropsychologists trained in Neurofeedback in Quebec.
5

7. Does the College of Physicians Endorse Neurofeedback?

In March 2016, the Quebec College of Physicians found that Biofeedback or Neurofeedback could be useful in the approach of certain health disorders.
6

8. Who are the specialists who support us?

They are psychologists, members of the Order of Psychologists of Quebec. They are supported by Medical Electrophysiology Technologists.

Costs & Insurance

1

4. Do you accept the RAMQ card?

Since we are a private clinic, we do not accept the RAMQ card. However, our services are covered by the majority of insurance plans.
2

5. How much does it cost?

File opening – $25nnPhase 1 – Initial interview + brain activity assessment: $750nnPhase 2 – Custom protocol: $170 per training session (example: $170 x 12).
3

21. Is it reimbursed by insurance companies?

Many insurance companies cover part or all of the costs for assessment and training. Check with your insurance company for their terms.
4

22. Does the SAAQ pay for treatment if I was in a road accident?

In many cases, yes. We invite you to contact your compensation agent to make a request.
5

23. I am in the military, are those services paid?

In many cases, yes. We invite you to contact your compensation agent to make a request.

Process & Evaluation

1

9. Do you give a medical diagnosis?

No. Although psychologists do a detailed assessment of brain activity, this is not a medical diagnosis. The goal is to determine which brain regions will need to be trained in Neurofeedback.
2

13. What happens during the evaluation?

First appointment: 30-minute interview with a psychologist + electroencephalogram (30 min).nnData analysis and report production.nnSecond appointment: Discussion of results with the psychologist (30 minutes).
3

14. Do I have to stop my medication for the evaluation?

Neuroperforma cannot make recommendations regarding medication. For health reasons, it is not recommended to stop your medication for the evaluation.
4

15. What is the difference between an EEG and a qEEG?

An EEG allows to visually see brain activity. A qEEG adds mathematical algorithm analysis to quantify and locate brain frequencies in 3 dimensions.
5

17. How many sessions per week do you need?

Ideally, we recommend 2 to 3 sessions. The minimum to be effective is 1 session per week.

Effectiveness & Results

1

16. How many sessions does it take to see improvements?

Usually, between 4 to 5 sessions you should start seeing improvements.
2

20. Are the improvements sustainable?

Yes. The benefits obtained with Neurofeedback are usually lasting and permanent. A study by Joel Lubar showed improvements were maintained even 10 years after training ended.
3

27. Is it effective for ADHD?

Yes. Neurofeedback is now classified as a Level 5 treatment for attention disorders according to Evidence-based Practice in Biofeedback and Neurofeedback 2016. Level 5 is the highest level of effectiveness.
4

28. Is it effective for anxiety?

Yes. Neurofeedback is classified as a treatment level 4 out of 5 for anxiety disorders.
5

29. Is it effective for concussions?

Yes. Neurofeedback addresses neurological aspects: attention, concentration, memory, anxiety, mood, sleep and migraines.
6

34. Is it effective for sleep disorders?

Yes. Neurofeedback training can bring brain activity towards better functioning. We often notice a decline and sometimes complete disappearance of sleep disorders.

Safety & Effects

1

18. Can I drink alcohol before my sessions?

It is recommended not to consume alcohol 48 hours before training.
2

19. Can I use cannabis before my sessions?

If consumption is recreational, it is recommended not to consume cannabis within 48 hours of Neurofeedback training.
3

24. Is it dangerous and are there any side effects?

Neurofeedback trainings usually have no side effects. However, it is normal to sometimes feel tiredness in the hours following the training.
4

25. Do you use needles?

No. We do not puncture the skin. We use plastic syringes to apply conductive gel between the scalp and the electrode.
5

26. Do you give electric shocks?

No. The electrodes only capture the signals emitted by the brain. They act as antennas.
