What are mood disorders and impulsivity?

Mood disorders are conditions where negative emotions are felt more intensely and for longer periods than in most people. The person struggles to manage their emotions, which affects mental and physical health, as well as professional, family, and social life. Common forms include depression, bipolar disorder, and dysthymia — a milder but persistent form of depression lasting at least two years.

Impulsivity is the tendency to act or speak without considering the consequences, reflecting difficulty with self-control. It manifests through poor anticipation and reduced emotional and behavioral regulation. Neuroscience reveals that this disinhibition is often associated with electrical imbalances in the brain’s cortex.

Good to know: According to the Public Health Agency of Canada Report on Mood and Anxiety Disorders (2016), about 3.5 million people used health services for anxiety and mood disorders in 2009–2010. Neurofeedback is a powerful tool for stress management and relaxation, helping to reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) and promote a deep sense of calm.

Our Method

How Neurofeedback Helps Stabilize Mood and Reduce Impulsivity

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive method that trains the brain to normalize its rhythms and connectivity. Targeting networks involved in emotion regulation, attention, and response inhibition it helps reduce mood instability, anxiety, and impulsivity over time.

Clinical interview and questionnaires focused on mood, stress, sleep, and impulsivity. Quantitative EEG (qEEG) mapping of brain activity related to emotional regulation, sustained attention, and inhibition.

Designed by a psychologist according to your goals (e.g., reduce rumination, improve sleep, manage “hot” reactions). Use of evidence-based protocols to stabilize mood and improve self-control.

12 sessions of 50 minutes guided by a trained practitioner. Real-time feedback on your brainwaves through visual or auditory stimuli. Gradual learning of a more stable brain state.

Regular review of progress (mood, sleep, impulsivity, focus). Protocols adjusted as your brain gains stability.

Effects typically appear after 5–7 sessions, and benefits continue to strengthen after completing all 12 sessions, thanks to neuroplasticity.

FAQ – Mood Disorders, Impulsivity, and Neurofeedback

1

What are mood disorders?

Mood disorders include depression, bipolar disorder, and dysthymia — a milder but long-lasting form of depression. They are characterized by prolonged sadness or distress, loss of interest, sleep and energy disturbances, and sometimes suicidal thoughts. They impact family, social, and professional functioning.

2

What is impulsivity, and why is it a problem?

Impulsivity refers to acting or speaking without thinking ahead, even when negative consequences are possible, in the heat of the moment. It’s linked to brain circuits that manage inhibition and emotional regulation. Impulsivity can fuel conflicts, lead to compulsive spending and risky behavior, or negatively impact performance in both work and school. It often coexists with anxiety, ADHD, or mood disorders.

3

How can neurofeedback help with mood and impulsivity?

Neurofeedback trains brain activity non-invasively to promote more stable states. By targeting networks involved in emotional regulation, attention, and inhibitory control, results often include: More stable mood and fewer ruminations, Reduced anxiety and stress, Better sleep and improved concentration, Fewer impulsive reactions and greater self-control.

4

Is it painful or risky?

No. It’s non-invasive and painless. Sensors placed on the scalp measure brain activity — there is no electrical stimulation. No known typical side effects; you remain comfortably seated throughout the session.

5

Can it be combined with my current treatments?

Yes. Neurofeedback can be combined with psychotherapy, lifestyle habits, and medication when indicated. Coordination with your healthcare provider is encouraged.

6

How are impulsivity, sleep, and stress related?

Lack of sleep and stress amplify the hyperreactivity of emotional circuits, weakening frontal inhibition and fostering impulsive responses. By improving brain stability and sleep quality, neurofeedback helps reduce this vulnerability.

7

What if I've never done neurofeedback before?

No prior experience is required. You’ll be guided through each step; sessions are comfortable, objectives are clear, and follow-up is consistent.
