What Is a Migraine?

Migraine is a common and chronic form of headache, a complex neurological disorder that differs from a simple headache through its intensity and the diversity of its symptoms. An attack typically lasts between 4 and 72 hours and can range from moderate to severe. Approximately one-third of sufferers experience an aura before the headache, which manifests as visual, sensory, or speech/motor disturbances.

What Happens in the Brain:

Migraine results from abnormal neuronal excitability—a “storm in the brain.” Contrary to popular belief, the pain is not caused by blood vessel dilation but by neurogenic inflammation around the nerves and blood vessels of the meninges, triggered by nervous system activity.

Who Is Affected?

Migraines affect 10–15% of the global adult population, including about 1.3 million Quebecers.

Good to know: Migraines are three times more common in women than in men, with the gap widening after puberty. They usually appear during adolescence—90% of cases begin before the age of 40, often during the peak working years.

Often Associated with Other Challenges

Fixed
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Significant impact on quality of life, family life, work, and relationships
  • Absenteeism (4–16 workdays lost per year) and presenteeism (reduced productivity)
  • Significant economic costs (billions annually in Canada)

Regain a Migraine-Free Life with Neurofeedback

Migraine shouldn’t control your life. Whether you suffer from throbbing pain, disabling nausea, or overwhelming sensitivity, you’re not condemned to live with it. Neurofeedback offers a concrete path toward a life free from this neurological condition—helping you regain control and peace of mind.

“My daily migraines drastically decreased and even disappeared. I can finally live without that sword hanging over my head. Neurofeedback has truly been a liberation.”

Give Your Child (or Yourself) a Calmer, Migraine-Free Life

Whether it’s your own migraines preventing you from being fully present for your children, or your child’s migraines affecting their schooling and family harmony, migraine can be deeply distressing. Watching your child suffer—or being unable to enjoy family moments because of pain—is heartbreaking. A safe and lasting solution is within reach.

Émilie and Marc were desperate about their 9-year-old son’s frequent migraines. His school absences continued to accumulate, and his irritability made homework a source of conflict. Family life became a constant adjustment. Neurofeedback gave them new hope.

“Our daughter’s migraines used to keep her home from school. Thanks to neurofeedback, she smiles again, her attacks are rare, and our family life has completely changed.”

Free Yourself from Migraines for a Fulfilling Academic and Social Life

The student years and early adulthood are pivotal moments, but migraines can turn these years into an exhausting struggle. Difficulty focusing in class, studying for exams, or joining social activities… You’re not alone in feeling this pressure—and there is a solution to regain mental clarity and energy.

Léa, 20, a university student, often had to isolate herself in the dark due to sudden migraines. This made her miss classes, fall behind on group projects, and decline social outings. She felt discouraged and feared it might affect her future.

“My migraines used to make me miss classes and important moments. With neurofeedback, I’m more alert, I sleep better, and I can finally focus on my studies and enjoy time with my friends. It’s a new life!”

Enhance Your Performance and Well-Being at Work by Managing Your Migraines

The professional world is demanding, and migraines can be a significant obstacle to your focus, productivity, and growth. Frequent absences don’t have to be your reality. Imagine regaining steady energy and mental clarity to face every challenge with renewed confidence.

Stéphanie, 35, an ambitious professional, was constantly held back by migraines that forced her to cancel meetings or work with reduced concentration. The anxiety of anticipating the next crisis disrupted her sleep and her ability to meet deadlines, leaving her exhausted and frustrated.

“Before, migraines drained my energy and focus at work. Thanks to neurofeedback, I feel calmer, my attacks are rare, and I’m confident tackling new professional challenges.”

What We Do

How Our Neurofeedback Method Can Reduce Your Migraines

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive brain training method that helps harmonize your brain’s electrical activity. By specifically targeting the imbalances related to neuronal excitability and brain hyperactivity responsible for migraines, it can help you achieve lasting relief and a better quality of life.

Clinical evaluation and detailed questionnaire. Quantitative EEG (qEEG) analysis to identify which brain regions need training.

Designed by a psychologist based on your results and goals.

12 neurofeedback sessions, each lasting 50 minutes. Real-time interactive exercises to regulate brain activity.

Ongoing analysis of progress and program adaptation.

Optimized abilities that continue to improve even after the program ends.

FAQ – Migraines and Neurofeedback

1

What is a migraine?

A neurological condition involving brain mechanisms that release inflammatory substances around the head’s nerves and vessels, causing pain. It’s often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, light/sound sensitivity, and can be episodic or chronic.

2

What's the difference between a migraine and a tension headache?

A tension headache feels like a tight “band” around the head—mild to moderate. A migraine is typically moderate to severe, pulsating, sometimes one-sided, and often comes with nausea or light/noise sensitivity.

3

What is a migraine with aura?

It involves temporary neurological symptoms (visual, sensory, or speech-related) that appear before or during pain, linked to a spreading electrical wave in the brain (cortical spreading depression).

4

Why are some people more affected?

Genetic and hormonal factors (more common in women), sensory hypersensitivity, and difficulty adapting to changes (sleep, pressure, temperature, stress, etc.).

5

Does neurofeedback hurt? Are there side effects?

No. It’s non-invasive and painless—sensors placed on the scalp simply record brain activity to guide the training—no known side effects.

6

Can I combine it with my current treatments?

Yes. Neurofeedback can complement medical treatments (both crisis and preventive) and lifestyle measures. The goal is to optimize brain regulation.
